Nawal El Moutawakel
An athlete who won the 400 meter hurdles at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, therefore becoming the first female North African Muslim to be recognized as an Olympic champion, and the first Moroccan to win a gold medal at the Olympics. She represented Morocco in fifteen different championships, winning first place in ten different competitions. In 2007, she was appointed as the Minister of Sports in Morocco, and she is currently a member of the International Olympic Committee. She received a total of eleven honorary awards, including the King Hassan II of Morocco’s National Merit in 1983 and the United Nation’s Goodwill Ambassador for the Millennium Development Goals in 201.
